Ground layer (mostly!) of a mesic pine flatwoods plant community in October. Only a few miles from our place, but a vastly different species assemblage!

Oooh! perhaps a chanterelle? Nope, didn’t pluck or eat it.
Common bumblebee on sandhill chaffhead, Carphephorus bellidifolius.
Grass-leaved goldenaster, Pityopsis graminifolia – I think!
Vanilla-leaf, aka Deer-tongue, Trilisa odoratissima.
October-flower, Polygonella polygama, blooming right on schedule.
Red-headed woodpecker. Not a plant.
Slender goldentop, Euthamia caroliniana. Nearly invisible until it blooms.
Stiff-leaved aster, Ionactis linariifolia, with creeping blueberry, Vaccinium crassifolium.
Cotton-leaf golden-aster, Chrysopsis gossypina. very woolly.
